Smart Meter Reading

IEC AMR project uses Virtual Extension network
Building with AMR Electricity Meters at IEC project in Rishon
100% coverage is the key to wireless sensor networks success. A case in point is utility Smart Meter Reading, where gas, electricity or water meters are equipped with a wireless device that communicates the meter reading to a central location for billing and remote control of the meter. This technology promises great savings in terms of data collection, theft prevention, remote operation and the ability to offer prepaid services. Furthermore, following to its almost continuous reading capability, it can be and has actually been used for energy savings.

The first generation of AMR (Automated Meter Reading) has been using the “drive by” model, where a utility employee literally drives by accounts equipped with smart meters and collects the readings via a radio receiver and antenna affixed to the top of its vehicle. There is no continuous tracking and polling of data. AMR must obtain 100% coverage, or else meters within the network become invisible to the utility, requiring costly revisits, installations, wiring and repeaters.

Equally, the ability of the wireless signal to traverse several floors in a multi-tenant unit or to support a minimum range is a must. Nodes or gateways can only be installed at locations belonging to the utility – sidewalk pillars or the meter itself.

Virtual Extension products are ideal for AMR, as the technology they are based on, has solved all the above mentioned technological issues. It can be therefore applied for both drive-by and the new generation of fixed network reading; furthermore, the very same products are used in both cases, enabling the utilities companies a smooth transition from one mode to another. Its system IP-based capability is useful in particular in fixed networks configuration.

A 100 unit pilot installed at the Israel Electric Company together with Motorola in Rishon Le Zion has been operating flawlessly since its deployment in August 2005 till now.
